Darwin Year 2009: Celebrating the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary of The Origin of Species

Home

Charles Darwin is among the most influential scientists ever to have lived.  This year, the world celebrates two major anniversaries:

  • The 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Robert Darwin (12 Feb 1809 – 19 April 1882).
  • The 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species (24 Nov 1859).

Darwin’s work, along with those of many others both before and after him, laid the foundation for our increasingly detailed understanding of the history and diversity of life.  Although much has changed in evolutionary biology over the past 150 years, Darwin’s insights continue to play an important role.  This year we celebrate not just the man, but especially his legacy and the achievements of the entire field of science that he helped to establish.

This site is meant to serve as a source for evolution- and Darwin-related items to help people express their excitement about Darwin Year 2009.  In addition to a store that offers many original designs on t-shirts, mugs, bags, and other products, we have assembled a list of recommended books and links to other websites that provide information on Darwin Year events and/or evolutionary science in general.

We are proud to note that 50% of proceeds will be donated directly to biodiversity conservation-related charities, and the other 50% will be used to develop additional evolution-related web projects (hint: keep an eye on www.evolverzone.com and www.darwinaut.com!).

Update: Evolver Zone has been launched! This new site (funded in part from proceeds from Darwin Year 2009) is a resource for students, teachers, and researchers with an interest in evolution.

Evolver Zone

This site is still evolving, so check back for updates and new designs.

Thanks for visiting, and Happy Darwin Year 2009!
